Exoskeleton – 2017 golden manus®

For "Levitate Technologies", a company that invents new products, the American company "Pathway" has developed lightweight, wearable technology engineered to make repetitive arm movements easier and less strenuous for employees. The "AIRFRAME™" exoskeleton relieves the muscles, supports movement sequences and prevents tension in the area of the neck, shoulders and upper back. The system is so comfortable, that it can be easily worn all day long. Special attention was paid to the rotating mechanisms that need to be easily rotatable under heavy axial loads. A number of different iglidur® bearings from the igus® product range has been installed in this mechanical support system, including cylindrical plain bearings with and without flange and thrust washers. They guarantee a gradual activation during each movement of the arm.

A lightweight and compact design could be created with igus® products. The plastic bearings meet the design requirement for non-corrosive materials, thus allowing the exoskeleton to be used in challenging environmental conditions. Compared with metallic bearings, iglidur® components do not need to be lubricated, which is another big advantage in regards to wearing it in direct contact with clothes.
