Approval according to EU regulation 10/2011
Many drylin® stainless steel linear axes and linear rails are approved in accordance with FDA and EU guidelines and ensure maximum safety for production processes in the food, medical and bottling industries. Thanks to their blue colouring, they are easy to identify and minimise the risk of contamination.

In addition, igus® is a member of the EHEDG expert network. Its task is to develop guidelines for the hygienic design of machines and systems for the food processing industry.

Not all stainless steels are the same

Hardened stainless steel
Linear axis guidance made of hardened stainless steel is usually offered in combination with recirculating ball bearing systems and roller bearing guides. The metal balls in the guidance system need a strong counterpart to prevent the balls from running in. Hardened stainless steel - such as AISI 420C, AISI 440B, AISI 440C - has a comparatively high carbon content (C content over 0.5 %) to make hardening possible at all. This means that the hardened stainless steel is only corrosion-free to a limited extent. The lubrication required for recirculating ball bearing systems and roller bearing guides means that there is a risk of contamination of the products, which is undesirable in many areas.

Non-hardened stainless steel
Although non-hardened stainless steel has a lower hardness due to its lower carbon content, it is significantly more resistant to corrosion or aggressive cleaning agents and chemicals. However, as recirculating ball bearing systems or roller bearing guides are less suitable for running on non-hardened stainless steel, a so-called plain bearing system is used. The punctual force acting on the rail material is thus converted into a surface force. The load on the linear rail is distributed over a larger area and material wear is avoided.

Spindle materials

igus® uses self-locking trapezoidal threaded spindles made of steel and stainless steel for all drylin® linear units. For special applications, spindles made of hard-coated aluminium are also available on request. High helix lead screws made of stainless steel are also available and configurable for the stainless steel series. These options enable significantly higher travel speeds and pitches to be realised.

Shaft materials

Shafts made of hard anodised aluminium are part of the standard range and are the most commonly used version. The reason for this is their low friction and wear values and short delivery times. If the linear axis design with spindle drive (SHT) is chosen, shafts made of steel or stainless steel, as in this series, are available in addition to aluminium.

Bearing materials

Without the use of external lubricants and also maintenance-free? This applies to all bearing points of the drylin® linear units for drive technology. The high-performance plastics are optionally available for applications with high temperatures of up to +180 °C (iglidur® X). If FDA-compliant components are required, then bearing materials made of iglidur® A180 provide a remedy.
