What is soft robotics?
igus® robolink® Soft Robotic: 6 DOF articulated arm as a "linear drive". The arm is "soft" and pliable. Only a start and end point is programmed in the application. The linear movement is guided by an axis and does not have to be programmed or be "calculated". The system works without higher mathematics (i.e. without inverse kinematics).
Robotics is experiencing completely new impulses through the use of biologically inspired technologies. The focus is on soft, organic structures and the imitation of movement sequences from living nature instead of rigid materials and unyielding movements.
The aim is for the robots to interact intuitively and sensitively. This can be achieved through soft, organic structures on the one hand and highly intelligent components such as sensors or programmed algorithms on the other. Numerous scientific disciplines are therefore working hand in hand to research possible applications for soft robotics. In Soft Robotics, materials, ergonomics and biomechanics researchers as well as biomechatronics engineers work closely with drive and software developers.
Possible applications for soft robotics
Robots are currently being used in industry in particular. Although they are "intelligent", they are not compliant. For safety reasons, they usually work in cages, separate from the human workers. In the future, soft robotics could be used in industrial companies (assistance robots), for example, but above all in the care sector (service robots) or in medical technology.
Soft robotics and robolink®
The robolink® modules essentially work according to the principle of soft robotics - less precise than the average precisely programmed industrial robot. This also makes programming robolink® much easier.
