Lightweight and reliable - rod end bearings in a race car

University students on the Arrabona Racing Team, based in Hungary, are building a race car that is to be especially reliable and lightweight. The components must be extremely lightweight so that the overall vehicle can be as light as possible. They must also require no lubrication or maintenance.

The car's pedal box uses igus® polymer plain bearings, which are about 80% lighter than comparable metal bearings. The polymer bearings also ensure maintenance-free dry operation without lubricant throughout the racing season.
