iglidur plain bearing in the manoeuvrable cargo bike - small and robust

Profile

  • What was needed: Plain bearings for the steering and tilting mechanism
  • Requirements: Smallest possible dimensions, insensitive to dirt, moisture, vibration and temperature fluctuations, wear-resistant, low-friction
  • Field of application: Bicycle technology
The company Butchers & Bikes, based in the butcher's district of Copenhagen, makes sporty cargo bikes on which you can lean dynamically thanks to patented built-to-tilt technology. The design reduces the risk of tipping over and ensures plenty of riding pleasure, because the usual braking before corners and subsequent ponderous starting are no longer necessary.

Problem

For the bearing points in the tilt mechanism and on the steering rods, the designers were looking for alternatives to the usual metal bearings. The main requirement: dimensions as small as possible to fit into the slim design and reduce production costs. In addition, the components should be able to withstand the constant loads caused by impacts, the transport weight and the changing weather conditions with wind, sun, snow and frost.

Solution

Butchers & Bicycles opted for plain bearings made of wear-resistant iglidur material. The key advantage of the plastic bushings for the designers was that they require far less space than other bearing solutions. They made it possible to reduce production costs by using simple sheet metal frames for the surrounding structure. Tolerances, the design and the production methods fit together so perfectly. The avoidance of external lubricants brings an added bonus for bike owners, who don't have to worry about regular bearing maintenance.
